15 mm Peter Pig Panzerfausts Review (08-0359)

Feb 22, 2013

Peter Pig has long been a source for 15 mm figures for wargaming.  They have a variety of figures in small affordable packs, and are well suited for use as Flames of War figures.

Battlefront is the reigning king of WWII 15 mm figure production, with a depth and breadth that nobody else in the industry can match.  However, in packaging their figures in a manner that fits out full Flames of War platoons, they do limit the options available.  For a bit of variety, or else in pursuit of specialty figures, it can be advantageous to source figures elsewhere.

The Peter Pig Panzerfaust pack contains 8 figures armed, not very surprisingly, with panzerfausts.  Struck in three poses, there are three grenadiers shooting panzerfausts from one knee, two shooting them standing, and three schlepping them at a trot.  While the one-knee shooter is a common pose, the other two are nice variations with the last one being unique in my experience to this pack.

The bases of these figures are small.  So small that I would insert a spacer beneath them before mounting them to a base just to give myself  more ability to texture the base.  Without a spacer these figures may end up looking like they’ve sunk into the mud.

When looking at the panzerfaust itself, every company seems to have a different interpretation as to the shape and size of the weapon.  These figures may have too short of a “pipe” on the back of the weapon, and the warhead has a bit too much of a point for my taste.  While the former issue is hard to correct, the latter can be corrected with the judicious application of a file.

Comparison of the Peter Pig Panzerfaust figures to Others

My biggest question when sourcing figures 15 mm figures from different suppliers is whether or not they are size compatible.  Battlefront’s Flames of War figures tend to be larger and bulkier than the others, so insuring that the non-Battlefront figure does not end up looking like a pygmy in comparison.

The Peter Pig panzerfaust figures fall in between the Plastic Soldier Company panzerfaust figures from the German Late War Heavy Weapons box set and Essex’s 15 mm panzerfaust figures.  The Plastic Soldier Company figures are really a bit too thin to mix well with Battlefront figures, and although these figures are considerably less bulky that Battlefront’s, I think they could be used without too much difficulty.

Concluding Thoughts on the Peter Pig Panzerfausts

The Peter Pig panzerfausts are a reasonable way to source 15 mm panzerfaust figures.  At about $5 for 8, or $0.62 per figure, they are fairly priced for a small figure pack.  Two of the poses are pretty original, the standing figures, and the third is very functional.  There are some minor issues with the models, being the thin base and pointy panzerfaust, but these are really minor.  The figures are smaller than Battlefront’s average grenadier, but I think they would work just fine together.

  1. Nice info Nick. I will have to check out Peter Pig for FJ options.

    • Definitely do. If you need just a few figures of one kind or another they’re great. I would hesitate to build a full Flames of War platoon out of them just because of the number of different packs I’d need to source, but for a skirmish game or specialists they’re very reasonable.

Before you get any German specialist figures though ring me up. Clearly I’ve got some extras on hand…
